Day 10 evening Ronnie O'Sullivan 13-8 Ali Carter

Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan cruised past Ali Carter 13-8 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship in Sheffield.

O'Sullivan looked composed in the first session, taking a 5-3 lead, but Carter held himself together in the next to stay in touch at 7-9.

Analysis

"This was O'Sullivan's first serious test of his title credentials after a year on the sidelines and he came through strongly.
"For two sessions Carter pushed him hard. O'Sullivan was at times visibly feeling the heat but he never allowed his opponent to get in front and he finished with a flourish.
"He's not playing at his best by any means, but thanks mainly to his continuing work with psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters, O'Sullivan is far more accepting these days of not reaching perfection every time he takes to the table.
"He's a calmer and a more contented individual. As he puts it, 'my opponent has to beat me these days, I don't beat myself'."

But it was all O'Sullivan in the final session, rattling in a century as he dropped only one of five frames played.

The result sets up an all-Essex last-eight clash against Stuart Bingham.

O'Sullivan, seeking to win his fifth Crucible title, only returned to snooker at the start of the tournament after a self-imposed 11-month sabbatical from the sport.

And while world number one Mark Selby - who lost to Barry Hawkins - said he felt "burned out" as a result of playing too much snooker, the break appears to have done 37-year-old O'Sullivan, who seemed fresh and invigorated, the power of good.

O'Sullivan said: "I am pleased to get through. Even last year, quite a few times I felt it was slipping away but you have to stick in there and take each pot at a time.

"You have to realise it is not a sprint but a marathon. I knew this would be a proper test against Ali. It is not going to get any easier and you just have to keep plodding along."

Two-time world runner-up Carter, who threatened to retire in 2011, remains winless in 13 attempts against O'Sullivan in a ranking-event match - something which BBC pundit and seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry described as "tough" to get over.

"Ronnie plays like this every time I have played against him - no wonder I haven't beaten him," said Carter, who has suffered for much of the last two years from the debilitating bowel condition Crohn's disease.

Quarter-final line-up

Ding Junhui (Chn) v Barry Hawkins
Shaun Murphy v Judd Trump
Ronnie O'Sullivan v Stuart Bingham
Ricky Walden v Michael White (Wal)
Players are English unless stated

"I was there trying to win, not avoid defeat. It was a tough day today and he did not do anything wrong. Ronnie will go on to win it if his head doesn't fall off."

In a repeat of last year's final, breaks of 78, 66 and a sublime 125 allowed 'The Rocket' to surge ahead in the first session.

After 'The Pilot' won four of the next five frames to make it 7-7, O'Sullivan took the last two, courtesy of breaks of 73 and 86, to sneak ahead going into Monday evening's decisive session.

Both players had their chances in a tense opening frame, but it was O'Sullivan who went further ahead.

Carter pulled a frame back, but his opponent took the next two with breaks of 88 and 106 to move within a frame of victory.

And there was to be no miraculous recovery as a knock of 89 proved enough for O'Sullivan to progress.

The 23-year-old Englishman converted his 6-3 overnight lead into a 10-5 victory, firing in breaks of 104, 73 and 61 along the way.

Trump will next face Matthew Stevens or Marco Fu in the last 16.

I feel at home out there on the big stage
Judd Trump

China's Ding Junhui beat Alan McManus of Scotland 10-5 in the other match in Wednesday's morning session.

Ding had led 7-2 overnight and withstood a fightback from the 42-year-old McManus, who won the first three frames on Wednesday, to set up a match against England's Mark King in round two.

Dale looked like he might push Trump closer when he won Wednesday's opening frame to cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Welshman then saw the next three frames slip away and with them his realistic hopes of winning.

The consolation of a 147 break and £35,000 cheque beckoned in frame 14 as Dale reached 96 with 12 reds and blacks, only to rattle a long red around the jaws of the yellow pocket.

"It was a tough game at the start and we didn't play too great in the first four frames but after that I stepped up the pace," Trump told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I made a few big breaks and my safety started to get a bit better. I felt relaxed."

He added: "I've had a lot of support over the last couple of days so it's pleasing when people stick by you, even when you're not playing that well. I think people know what I'm capable of and if I get my potting right at this tournament then I'll have a good chance.

"I feel at home out there on the big stage. In a couple of tournaments, when the crowd's not as big, it's a bit disheartening.

"When you come here in the World Championship in front of a packed crowd then you've got to bring your best stuff."

Frame 17:

Marco Fu punished some careless play from Matthew Stevens to move 6-3 clear.

The Hong Kong cueman surged into a 3-0 lead, aided by a break of 70 in the third frame, before an 83 got the Welshman - twice a Crucible runner-up and six times a semi-finalist - on the board.

But Stevens missed chances in the fifth and sixth frames as Fu extended his advantage to 5-1, including a superb 71 break.

Stevens won a much-needed frame after a re-spotted black and a 74 in the next cut the gap to two, but Fu took the final frame of the session.

They will resume at 14:30 BST on Wednesday.

The Chinese star trailed the veteran Scot 1-0 and 2-1 but a flawless break of 131 and a 67 levelled it at 2-2.

"I have got a sneaky suspicion for Ding this year. His temperament has impressed me over the last few years and his talent is not in doubt - there is no-one better when he is in the balls."

A magnificent 129 and further breaks of 61, 51 and 81 helped the world number nine make it six frames in a row ahead of their second session on Wednesday.

Northern Ireland's Mark Allen was beaten 10-8 by Mark King in the first round match at the World Championship in Sheffield.

The Antrim player lost the first two frames but recovered to lead 3-2 and then 4-3, before losing the final two frames of the first session.

In the final session, Allen went 8-6 ahead, but King hit back by winning four frames on the trot to advance.

Allen, a World semi-finalist in 2009, lost in the first round last year.

Allen, who retained his World Open title in March, made an unconvincing start against King, who is making his 14th appearance at the Crucible.

After going 2-0 down, the 27-year-old won the third frame comfortably with the help of a break of 83, the highest of the first session.

Allen restored parity after a run of 66 and the pair then won two frames apiece, King levelling at 4-4 with a break of 74 before winning the ninth to take a one-frame advantage into their second session.

Allen levelled by taking the first frame of the evening session and then fought back from 45 points to win the 11th by producing a 68 clearance to lead 6-5.

King looked certain to get on terms again in the 12th as Allen required three snookers but the Northern Irishman fought back to snatch the frame and take a 7-5 lead in what looked like a devastating blow for the Englishman.

To his credit, King fought back to win the final frame before the mid-session interval helped by a run of 44.

Allen restored a two-frame lead as a 31 clearance ended a marathon 14th frame but the dogged King showed real character to level at 8-8 after breaks of 74 and 89.

King took the last two and faces China's Ding Junhui or Scot Alan McManus at the last-16 stage.

Frame 19:  a 63 in the last seals a famous win for the Thai player another big name is out!

Thai player Poomjaeng - the world number 70 who came through four qualifying rounds to reach the televised stages - made a blistering start to the afternoon as runs of 72, 59 and 60 helped him ease into a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval with Maguire running in 69 to win the third frame.

A 50 handed Poomjaeng - who is bidding to become the first Thai player to win a match at the Crucible in 14 years - the fourth frame, but Maguire cancelled out a 56 from his opponent with a 63 to claim the sixth frame.

The final two frames of the session were shared with former UK champion Maguire happy to snare the closing frame of the session as the players were hauled off a frame before their allocated nine for the session were due to be completed.

They play to a finish on Tuesday afternoon with the first man to 10 securing a meeting with Michael White in the last 16.

Day 3 John Higgins v Mark Davis

John Higgins 6-10 Mark Davis result

84-0 (61), 90-27, 43-86 (68), 29-85 (85), 32-79 (69), 67-12 (51), 31-88, 40-96 (96), 30-93 (64), 96-4 (92), 57-63 (Higgins 57), 101-29 (69), 0-87 (81), 21-77, 82-4 (50), 24-92 (87)

Four-time champion John Higgins suffered a shock 10-6 defeat by Mark Davis in the first round of the World Championship at the Crucible.

Higgins led 2-0 but the world number 16 from Hastings forged 6-3 ahead overnight, with breaks of 85 and 96.

The Scot won two of the first three frames on Monday with runs of 92 and 69, but uncharacteristic errors allowed Davis to move within one of victory.

Higgins pulled a frame back but Davis made a composed 87 break to go through.

Despite winning the Shanghai Masters in September, defeat caps a disappointing season for Higgins, 37, who suffered a first-round Crucible exit for only the third time in 19 campaigns since his debut in 1995.

"It is just tough out there. Mark just punished me every shot I missed, and I did miss a couple of easy balls," said Higgins.

"Higgins was in somewhat resigned mood afterwards, feeling that age may have caught up with him. Certainly, he now seems susceptible to missing key balls when in the past he has been rock solid at the critical moments. Higgins, like Ronnie O Sullivan, is 37, O Sullivan having become the oldest player since Ray Reardon to win the title last year. Ironically, Mark Davis, three years their senior, is enjoying the most productive season of a career largely spent as a journeyman pro, but as Higgins graciously admitted, his victory was thoroughly merited."

"That is the difference now. I don't know if it is old age or not, but I just missed certain shots, and I don't know how I missed them.

"I could only ask other people who have been through it, but maybe the strain of it takes it out of you when you get to your late 30s and 40s.

"You can't just put it down to age because Mark is older than me, but maybe he hasn't been at the business end of tournaments so he hasn't got the grey hairs I have now.

"Anything half difficult I was missing and it put the pressure on me, and I couldn't cope with it in the end."

Davis would, in normal circumstances, have been seeded at the championship, but had to come through qualifying after Ronnie O'Sullivan's return to snooker.

Described by BBC snooker pundit John Parrott as 'the most improved player on the circuit', the 40-year-old was given one of the toughest draws, but clinched his biggest win at the Crucible on his eighth appearance.

"It is my best win ever, without a doubt," said a jubilant Davis, who has reached three ranking event semi-finals this season. "I know I beat him [Higgins] in the UK Championship, but I have never played well here in Sheffield.

"I am really proud of myself to play as well as I did.

"I knew it wasn't over and I still had a mountain to climb to win the last frame but the run of the balls was key today. John had none, and I had it all, but I played well both days."

Despite taking a 2-0 lead at the start of the match, Higgins looked out-of-sorts, winning only one of the next seven frames.

Three frames behind at 6-3, Higgins opened the final session with a confident break of 92. The Scot was 57 ahead in the next, but missed a black off the spot and after a tactical exchange, Davis cleared up.

Higgins won another, but his opponent held his nerve in the 13th frame with a break of 81.

Higgins, who won his fourth title in 2011, was on a break of 21 in the next. Hoping to develop some reds, he potted the green at pace before seeing the cue ball roll into a pocket and, once again, Davis showed composure to move one frame from victory.

'The Wizard of Wishaw' pulled a frame back, but luck deserted him again in the next, inadvertently pocketing a red, as Davis came to the table to seal a superb triumph with an 87 break, setting up an encounter with either Stuart Bingham or Sam Baird in the second round.

Day 3 Graeme Dott v Peter Ebdon

Graeme Dott 10-8 Peter Ebdon result

Graeme Dott beat Peter Ebdon 10-8 in the first round of the World Championship - a match that took over seven hours to complete.

The doughty Scot resumed at 8-6 up on the first available table once Monday's evening matches had concluded.

Ebdon, trailing 6-2, took four frames in a row before Dott won the last two.

Officials called a halt to their morning session and the players came back in the evening, with Dott winning the two frames he needed to advance.

The longest first-round match in Crucible history saw the late Eddie Charlton beat Cliff Thorburn 10-9 in 1989 in 10 hours, 24 minutes.

Ebdon, whose highest break was 39, showed his trademark battling qualities to edge the first four frames before a brave clearance saw 2006 champion Dott take the 13th on the black, and a run of 50 saw him move two clear before play ended ahead of the afternoon matches.

But a late-night finish to proceedings was avoided, as the players came back for the extra session, with Dott taking the 15th and 16th frames, including a century, to go through. The Scot will face 2005 champion Shaun Murphy in the second round.

This match is back on

Frame 15: Graeme stretches to a 9-8 lead 74-33

Frame 16: Thinking time for Peter at the moment, 100 from Graeme seals 4 in a row 10-8.

Day 3 Mark Allen v Mark King

5-4 mark king end of session

Northern Ireland's Mark Allen trails England's Mark King 5-4 after the first session of their first round match at the World Championship in Sheffield.

The Antrim player lost the first two frames of the best-of-19 match but recovered to lead 3-2 and then 4-3, before losing the final two frames.

The world number six must improve his form if he is to overcome King, ranked 30, when they resume later on Monday.

Allen, a World semi-finalist in 2009, lost in the first round last year.

The winner King-Allen match will face China's Ding Junhui or Scot Alan McManus at the last-16 stage.

Allen, who retained his World Open title in March, made an unconvincing start against King, who is making his 14th appearance at the Crucible Theatre.

After going 2-0 down, the 27-year-old won the third frame comfortably with the help of a break of 83, the highest of the first session.

Allen levelled after a run of 66 and the pair then won two frames apiece, King levelling at 4-4 with a break of 74 before winning the ninth to take a one-frame advantage into their second session.

Sunday 21 April 2013

Day 2 Shaun Murphy v Martin Gould

Match Score Shaun Murphy 10-5 Martin Gould - Result

Frame 10: Gould in the balls after little breaks from each player,  Down to the colours in their first frame of the session and the players exchange safeties until Murphy pots the yellow but he snookers himself and Gould is back in to lay a snooker that Murphy gets out of.  They’re on the brown with the clock up to 50 minutes for the first frame. Murphy takes it. 6-4.

Frame 11: The second frame is also plodding along at a very slow pace. Murphy makes a 95 to claim the second frame and open up a three frame advantage. That was an exceptional break but the yellow hangs in the jaws preventing him from making an even more impressive break.

Frame 12: 78 for Shaun to win the frame 8-4.

Frame 13: 8-5 Gould gets one back 8-5 interval

Frame 14: 106 from Murphy one away from victory 9-5.

Hawkins rattled off the first frame of their second session with a break of 68 and then used his superior match play experience to take the next three to win the match before the mid-session interval.

Lisowski, a potter and break-builder of some quality, let the match slip away from him with some poor safety shots as Hawkins won the next three frames 61-31, 75-36 and 71-21 to secure a spot in the last-16.

Day 2 John Higgins v Mark Davis

I would say the Wizard of Wishaw is heavy favourite

Frame 2: Safety battle Higgins made 41 first chance then on the 2nd won the frame 2-0.

Frame 3: Higgins a makes 29 before running short on position and retreating to baulk. A safety exchange ensues. Higgins will be disappointed not to have made a bigger break there as the reds were pretty open with the pink on the black spot. Davis on the board

Frame 6: 51 from Higgins 3-3

Frame 7: Davis leads again

Frame 8: 96 to extend his lead 5-3

Frame 9: 65 then a total clearance to get a 6-3 session win.

Higgins, who was beaten by Davis in December at the UK Championships, opened the session with a break of 61 to take the first frame and, while the second frame was a little less fluid in terms of potting, the former world champion prevailed 90-27.

Davis, who, despite being ranked 16th, had to qualify for the tournament courtesy of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s return to action, responded magnificently with breaks of 68 and 85 to draw level at the mid-session interval and he took the first frame after the interval with a break of 69.
Higgins, renowned for his break building abilities, responded with a 51 to level things up at 3-3 but Davis ground out the next frame 81-33 before a break of 96 confirmed the penultimate frame of the session to ensure that he’d have an overnight lead.

Davis then wrapped up the final frame of the session with a break of 64 to take the three frame advantage his play had merited.
